Hyundai engineers are out testing models for a new generation of the Veloster. The models reveal that the revamped Veloster keeps the basic shape of the existing model, consisting of the unique three-doors-and-hatch configuration. (There’s a single door on the motorist’s side and 2 on the other).
In the beginning look, it looks very much like the present model, but closer assessment reveals some differences. Up front, the hood looks lower, and it tapers down to exactly what seems to be an overstated variation of the “waterfall grille” Hyundai has actually implemented on the Elantra GT, and new Sonata. The headlights look slimmer, and there appear to be fewer hectic, “quirky” lines.
Moving backwards, we find the exact same asymmetric door design consisting of one door on the left, and two on the right. On the right side, the rear door manage is still embeded the corner of the window. The glass location on the right also appears a bit larger thanks to a lower edge that stays lower for longer.
From previous test mules, we understand that the upgraded Veloster has a slightly longer wheelbase than the existing model, which ought to lead to more room inside. The new car also looks to be much sportier thanks to a lower, more streamlined profile.
In the powertrain department, the base option will likely be a version of the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 found in the existing Veloster Turbo, where it delivers 201 horsepower. Above this might be a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 being established by the Hyundai N performance department. The engine makes its debut this year in an i30 N model to be offered overseas, and in its tamest setting needs to deliver around 246 hp. While the United States will lose out on the i30 N, there’s an opportunity we see a Veloster N instead.
Hyundai will take the covers off its revamped Veloster in late 2017 or early the following year. Sales won’t start up until 2018, with the car likely showing up as a 2019 model.
